My name is Benji Anderson and I have a 48 acre pastured hog farm in Madison County, GA. All my hogs are Berkshire crosses mostly with Duroc and Tamworth. I raise all my own hogs and use no chemical fertilizers or pesticides on my pastures. Hogs graze and root around and are also supplemented with a antibiotic free grain ration. Pastures are rotated to keep the land and the hogs healthy.

In stock now! Saddle Creek Bee Farm specializes in pure raw wildflower honey. This honey is collected from Gwinnett and Barrow Counties. It is a great item to beat those allergies! Mixed selection of squeezable plastic, and glass containers.

We also have Wilderness Family Naturals Coconut Sugar, Flour and Organic Popcorn in the Market for sale! When you come to pick up your order, check them out! They are also now online!

Remember we have Kombucha available! If you are not familiar with it, Kombucha is a naturally fermented tea with natural probiotics! It has been around for centuries originating in Asia. It is said to have healing properties and because it is naturally fermented, is a great support for the digestive system. When your here, ask me for a sample! I’d love your feedback!

The locally grown market is now open and ready for your orders. The market will no longer be located in the courtyard behind Polly’s at the Pier. The new pick up location is at the Lawaetz Museum at Little La Grange from 3:30 until 6 pm.

Tahira from Divine Delight Delectable is now back in town and accepting orders so those delicious veggie burgers and muffins are once again available.

Last week found me with happy reunions, a lot of love, and an unexpected visitor who reminded me of my quest to always see sunshine, always sing my song, and always believe that whatever I touch, I do my best to make magic happen.

The reunion was with some of my West End pals that I am still extremely close with, I don’t see enough of, but when I am reunited, I feel like my family is all back, together. These people have known me since Kindergarten. It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, with a whole of growing, running, playing, learning. Yes, it was a good reunion of souls.

On Friday, I was down in my Cosmic shop, and had a surprise visit from one of my aunts. She lives far away, I see her, very rarely, I don’t keep up with her like I should, but I knew she was planning a visit, I just was not sure when that would take place.

She is the kind of woman that if sunshine could come out of her eyes, it would. But, if you cross her, or someone she loves, that sunshine can change to lightening, in seconds. It was amazing that her timing came right when I was having not a great end to the week. She breezed in, gave me a huge hug, we talked, she loved my shop, she listened as I talked about my breads, the names of my breads, the hippie clothing, me, the markets that I run, and especially this little market of love.

I explained to her how it works, how we run it, the customer base…I felt as if I couldn’t stop telling her about all that I do and all that is important to me.

She was intrigued with my Cosmic cookies…I told her they were called Hippie Cookies. She looked at me with a mix of sunshine and happy tears. She reminded me of two people who would be very, very proud of what I do, how I do things, and how passionate I am about things. When she left, I looked around at my shop, the sun that filters through the stained glass window, the leftover hippie cookies, and the racks of hippie clothing…her words as she left the shop were…“You are doing what you were meant to do, Baby Girl” (Because my grandmother had given me that name and it’s what my family always called me…)

And, my aunt was right…I am right where I was meant to be, doing what makes me happy, running markets that I am so entirely passionate about.

Today is Sunday, the market is open, and I leave you with love, passion, and a Sunday recharge…all from my surprise visitor.

Middle Tennessee Locally Grown:  Manchester Locally Grown Online Farmer's Market - It's Time to Order


Manchester Locally Grown online farmers’ market is now open for ordering.

REMEMBER the market closes at 10 pm on Tuesday evenings. This will give our farmers a little more time to harvest their products to fill your orders.

Cider and jelly, perennial plants, local baked goods, pork products, herbal bath & body products, local honey, fresh-laid chicken & duck eggs, and plenty more products are to be found on our market. Give them a try! Don’t forget to check for the flavor of our “Cookies of the Week” from Basically Breads.

  • Growers can sometimes remove items at the last minute, affecting your invoice. Please wait to make out your check until your total is established at market.

Hard to believe we may have our first snow on November 16th. I miss fall and really wish it would return, but it looks like we may have a very cold, wet early winter according to the persimmons and the meteorologists.

Roca Baby Candy has opened up online and added two types of Almond Roca. This would make a great addition to your holiday dessert table. I’ve sampled her candy and it is delicious!

Opossum Hollow Produce has updated inventory and also hopes to have some extras this weekend. So, if you miss getting an order in online there is the hope of purchasing at the pick up location on Saturday.

J.D. Hudson Farms is back online as well.

The market now offers over 200 products online – locally grown or locally made! We are truly a blessed community!

ALFN Local Food Club:  The Market is Open for A Very Local Thanksgiving!


Howdy there Food Club,

It may be hard to believe, but the market is open and it’s already time for your Thanksgiving orders! While good food’s an essential part of any holiday, rarely do the average folk put so much effort into such a thorough and proper feast. While we don’t carry pasture-raised Turduckens on our market, there’s still plenty of other ways to show thanks to our hard-working small Arkansas farms this holiday.

  • Those of you that already put down your deposit on a Falling Sky Farm turkey will certainly be thankful you did, and should have already been contacted by the farm about how to get it (let us know if you haven’t). For those that missed out, we recommend trying Hillcrest Artisan Meats or Butcher & Public for a local pasture-raised bird.
  • All the turkey talk I’ve heard is that brining is definitely the way to go. Maison Terre has put their own custom blend of organic fruits and spices into a flavor-infusing turkey brine sure to impress the holiday guests!
  • Green bean casserole is just about my favorite dish around, and this cast-iron, panko-covered recipe looks like a must-try. We’ve got plenty of local green beans, and I’ll be subbing our superior shiitake mushrooms for their buttons.
  • As far as favorite dishes go, potato gratin comes in a very close second. We’ve got plenty of potatoes, peppers, and somehow even the tomatoes needed for this delicious recipe!
  • When it comes to dessert, look no further than pie. Period. But how to possibly choose between local apple, blackberry, blueberry, peach, raspberry, strawberry, pecan, or sweet potato?!??!? Beats me!

Thanks to Kevin Shalin over at Rock City Eats for putting together this helpful guide for where to order just about anything else. Pies, dressing, casseroles, and smoked birds, oh my! Yup, this is definitely, 100% my favorite holiday.

Farm to Table Recipes

BUTTERNUT SQUASH with WALNUTS & VANILLA
Yield: Serves 4.
We’re using butternut squash for this dish, but you could easily use kabocha squash instead, or any firm, easy-to-peel, winter squash. You can either boil or roast the squash, directions are given for both methods.
Save Recipe
Ingredients
1 butternut squash, about 2 pounds, peeled, seeds removed, flesh cut into 1-inch cubes (see how to cut and peel a butternut squash)
3 bay leaves (if boiling the squash)
Salt
1 heaping cup of walnuts (can substitute pecans or pine nuts)
2-3 Tbsp butter
2 teaspoons grated ginger
1-2 teaspoons vanilla extract
Lemon juice
1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
Black pepper to taste
Method
1a If roasting Preheat oven to 400°F. Coat the cubed squash with a little vegetable oil and spread out onto a baking tray. Sprinkle with salt and roast until the cubes begin to brown, about 20 minutes. Remove from oven.
1b If boiling Put 4 cups of water into a medium-sized pot and add the bay leaves. Bring to a simmer. Add the squash to the pot. Boil, covered for 10 minutes. Drain.
2 Heat a large sauté pan over medium-high heat and toast the walnuts. Stir frequently or they will burn. Once they they start to brown, and you can smell the aroma of toasted walnuts, remove from heat.
3 Melt the butter in the pan with the walnuts over medium-high heat. Toss the walnuts to coat with butter, then add the squash. Toss them to coat with butter.
4 Add the grated ginger, vanilla extract, black pepper, a little salt and dried thyme and toss once more. Turn off the heat and squeeze some lemon juice over everything. Taste for salt and lemon and add more to taste. If you want this to be a bit more luxurious, mix in another tablespoon of butter or two before serving.

This cold weather means a pot of chili with grass fed beef locally grown peppers, onions, garlic, and tomatoes simmering on the wood stove. Steaming hot food and toasty warm heat from the fire make frigid winter evenings downright enjoyable.
