THIS JUST IN FROM BROWN’S HOLLAR FARM
We are selling fresh pumpkin pies again this year as a fundraiser for the Grundy County/Tracy City farmers’ market. Proceeds will go toward a storage room and possibly one addition. We will deliver on the TUESDAY before Thanksgiving UNLESS you, the customer, request a different date. You may order early, and be sure to put your desired date in the “Leave a Message for the Grower” section.
This week, we also have kale and organic turnip greens.
Thank you all so much.

THE COFFEE BREAK OPEN HOUSE
The Cumberland Farmers’ Market would like to announce its fall coffee break happening on Dec. 2, 2014, from 2-3 p.m. (before market) at the Sewanee Community Center.
This Coffee Break will target holiday gift-giving to get our customers (and new customers from the Sewanee community) to come see the market and order our wonderful products online. Artisans and farmers will be displaying their wares to show everyone what will be available on the market. Customers will also be able to buy products at this time—no waiting to order!
Everyone is welcome to enjoy the free parking, free entrance, and free samples! As the weather gets colder, doesn’t it sound wonderful to have hot coffee or tea and holiday treats to sample before you buy!!
Please come and meet all the farmers you haven’t met and spend some time visiting with us.
We will be making more announcements as vendors sign up, so please put us on your calendar for this important date. We hope to see you all.-————————————————————————————————————————————————————
PLACING AN ORDER
Before you order, be sure you see the little shopping cart. If you do not, log out and log in again. If this fails, turn off your computer completely and start again. This includes ordering from smart phones.
If you want to leave a comment for a grower, be sure to put it in the “Leave comment for grower” area in RED beneath the item you’re ordering. Placing comments in the market manager section will not be seen by the growers.-————————————————————————————————————————————————————
BIOINTENSIVE GARDENING
We have had several requests for information on biointensive gardening/farming. If you are interested in a very informal discussion group on this subject, please let us know so we can add you to the list, either on the teacher or student side. Everyone is welcome, including those not currently customers or growers on the market.-————————————————————————————————————————————————————
NEW DELIVERY DRIVER
If you would like to have your market order delivered, have you contacted Rachel Lynch, the new Sewanee delivery driver? E-mail: radelo50@yahoo.com or phone 931-598-0774.
Don’t forget: Rachel is NOT affiliated with the CFM and, therefore, is not authorized to accept payments of any kind on behalf of the CFM. Payment of all CFM orders MUST be made in advance of Tuesday’s delivery. Checks must be mailed in time to be posted to customer accounts before closing of market ordering on Monday. To ensure your account always has a positive balance, the CFM prefers payments in increments of at least $100.00. Mail checks made out to CFM to Kir Strobel, 744 Timberwood Trace, Monteagle, TN 37356.
Should at-home delivery not work for you, your second option is to leave your order at the Center to be picked up by you or a designée by 6 p.m. Wednesday. As with any left-behind order, there will be a $3.00 fee unless that order has been prepaid in full in advance. Don’t forget there is no freezer at the Center for the forseeable future, so it is imperative your items be picked up in a timely manner.-———————————————————————————————————————————————————-
PANETTONE COMING FOR THE HOLIDAYS! Be looking for it from Dogwood Farm.-————————————————————————————————————————————————————
Don’t forget…
If you do not receive an order confirmation within 5 minutes, your order has NOT been placed in the system. E-MAIL OR CALL US to get the problem solved so you will not be disappointed on market day.
Please remember the market closes at 10 a.m. on Monday; therefore, your order must be completed and placed, and you should be signed out of the software.-————————————————————————————————————————————————————-
If you have any questions, please call (931.592.3399, no voice mail) or e-mail (cumberlandfm@gmail.com) us.

CSA Farmers Market: How the Farmers Work Together
Many of the farmers participate with the operation of this market, and when no unexpected events/emergencies happen the market runs almost as smooth as clock work.
Today I received a panicked phone call from Racheal that she can’t open the market today because goats are out. So alas today I have to click the mouse, change the wordings and open the market.
Tuesday morning the farmers know what products they have to prepare for the market. CSA Farmers Market action starts Wednesday night when one of our helpers creates reports for packing frozen & dairy and prints the invoices, envelopes and other miscellaneous paperwork that enables us to get the farmers products to you. Michele from Fallen Oak Farm brings her items over and assembles the envelopes, invoices and packing reports than places them in the appropriated distribution location basket.
Thursday Morning Kurt from Ulrich Farm arrives with his items and packs up the orders that is suppose to go the West distribution area. Barb a helper takes the van and heads of to Almars where she meets with Linda Purdy from Westwind Mill and Pat Whetham from Whetham Organic. Orders going to the West side are packed and everyone takes the orders to their respective farms for customers.
The items they have for the East area are loaded in the van and taken back to White Pine Farm where Dale Kinney from White Pine Farm, Joe Law from Law Family Farm, Doreen Wilcox from BF&E Organics, and our helpers start to pack orders. As they are packed they are put in totes and placed in the walk in cooler. Of course frozen items go in the freezer and CSAFM is operating five chest freezers right now (it is going to be wonderful when we get the walk in). Krystal Owens son gets off from the bus at White Pine Farm where we pack orders and she loads up products that are going to Healthy Habitz which she will deliver before going home.
Friday morning Dale Kinney, Marian Listwak, and a helper go to White Pine Farm to load the van. We usually start loading at 7am as we carefully pack to make sure we don’t miss anything. Everything is color coded to help us know what to unload where it is suppose to go. If things go well we are on the road by 8:30 am to start delivering and the van does not arrive back until approximately 5pm. If I’m not helping with deliveries I usually stay close to the phone to deal with what every unexpected event that happens.
We operate somewhat like a co-op where the farmers are expected to do their share of work. Not all farmers can help so they contribute a higher percentage of their sales as compared to the grower that can participate with helping at the market.
Of course as always there is a fall person that fills in whenever any one is sick or goes on vacations or has to help friends whose goats get out. That person is me and if I don’t get back with everyone timely I can guarantee it is one of those weeks where I have to do double duty.
Until Next Time
Marian Listwak
Republican Valley Produce: COLD, COLD, COLD!
Wow, winter is here. I was barely ready for it, not sure about you. With this cold weather, we did lose some things. Radishes being the main one. Everything is looking amazingly well, despite the cold. Time will tell. With this cold, the one saving grace has been the full sun each day. It warms the high tunnels up and allows the plants to thaw. It also warms the soil. I hope it is enough to carry it through the next week. We usually get this cold snap in January, not November.
Please have your orders placed by 10 pm on Saturday. Deliveries will be on Tuesday. If you are in Wakefield I will deliver to school on Tuesday.
Special Note for Manhattan Customers:
With the winter market on NOVEMBER 22nd, you can either place a pre-order this market or next market. Remember, this is only for pick up at the winter market on November 22nd.
Stay warm!

My name is Benji Anderson and I have a 48 acre pastured hog farm in Madison County, GA. All my hogs are Berkshire crosses mostly with Duroc and Tamworth. I raise all my own hogs and use no chemical fertilizers or pesticides on my pastures. Hogs graze and root around and are also supplemented with a antibiotic free grain ration. Pastures are rotated to keep the land and the hogs healthy.

South Cumberland Food Hub: Time to Order Local Food!
Good Morning from the South Cumberland Food Hub.
Green Door Gourmet is out of green kale this week, but it should be back next week or the week after- it needs some time to grow back. Plants grow slowly during this time of year with the cooler temperatures and less daylight. They still have plenty of red russian kale though, as well as several other types of greens.
This is prime cold and flu season (it’s making the rounds in my family now) so load up on local garlic from Solace Farm. It can be used daily as a preventative.
